‘Fix Bayonets’ The Hamilton Collection Faithful Fuzzies Teddy Bear
The LDV, or Local Defence Volunteers, were formed on the 14th May 1940 when the Secretary of State for War Anthony Eden, addressed ‘men of all ages who wish to do something for the defence of their country’ on the BBC’s Home Service. He told them that their ‘loyal help’ would ‘make and keep our country safe.’ It was the then Prime Minister Winston Churchill who identified himself most closely with these brave volunteers and was responsible for the changing of their name to the more inspiring Home Guard in July 1940. He also instigated an annual ‘Home Guard Day’ to make the nation remember what it owed to these devoted men. The spirit of this continues with ‘Fix Bayonets’, a Faithful Fuzzies exclusive from The Hamilton Collection.
Handcrafted and hand-painted to an exacting standard, this bear portrays a typical Home Guard scene. It was during the Home Guard’s farewell parade on the 3rd December 1944 that King George VI declared ‘History will say that your share in the greatest of all our struggles for freedom was a vitally important one.’ This proud bear will do their best to ensure that the legacy of the Home Guard endures.
