The Lest We Forget '100 Years of Remembrance' Coin
This year marks 100 years since our nation first came to a standstill in honour of the fallen of the First World War. For 100 years, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh-month people have gathered at the Cenotaph in London and at war memorials around the country to lay wreaths of red poppies and stand silent for two minutes.
‘Near the memorial, there were moments of silence when the dead seemed very near,
when one almost heard the passage of countless wings
- were not the fallen gathering in their hosts to receive their comrades’ salute
and take their share in the triumph they had died to win?’
The Morning Post, The Cenotaph, London, 1919
A deeply poignant tribute to 100 Years of Remembrance
To mark the 100th Anniversary of the first Remembrance Day, and to honour all those who gave their lives during the Great War, a new coin has been struck. The limited-edition 2019 ‘100 Years of Remembrance’ Coin depicts the figure of winged Victory laying a wreath of poppies at the Cenotaph. Beautifully crafted the design evokes the style of the medallic art of the war era, in particular, that of the Victory medal that was awarded to over 6 million people who served between 1914-1918. It is the work of renowned artist Joel Iskovitz, in his own words, ‘The underlying theme is “Remembrance,” featuring a vision of a compassionate, and at times, a mournful Victory, underscoring the enormous costs of the Great War.’ As she places the wreath she reflects on the inscription from Binyon’s Ode of Remembrance, ‘As we that are left grow old’. The obverse of the coin features the regal portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, also designed by Joel Iskowitz.
Officially endorsed by The Lest We Forget Association — just 9,999 issued
This coin is a special collectors’ limited-edition issue — only 9,999 have been struck worldwide – meaning fewer than 1 in every 2,800 British households will be able to own one. The earliest orders will receive the lowest edition numbers. For this reason, applications will be processed on a strictly first-come-first-served basis and are limited to one coin per UK household.
Layered in Pure Silver & Struck to the highest-quality Proof Finish
Beautifully sculpted, each coin is struck not once but twice onto a specially prepared mirrored surface reserved only for the most important commemorative issues. Poignantly the poppy wreath is masterfully accented in full colour after each coin has been struck.
Free Collectors’ Presentation Folder
With your order, you will receive the official Collectors’ Presentation Folder, which stores and displays your coin safely and elegantly. A Certificate of Authenticity guaranteeing your coin’s specifications and provenance also accompanies your coin, with our compliments.
