Each year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, people the world over remember the fallen a with poppy - a way to show our appreciation and pay tribute to all those who have served and sacrificed their lives for our freedom. The poppy became the emblem of Remembrance after John McCrae (a serving officer) wrote the poem In Flanders Fields whilst fighting at Ypres – having been moved by the contradiction of the massed war graves surrounded by the great beauty of naturally growing poppies.
This new coin – exclusive to Bradford Exchange, combines all these Remembrance elements into one special commemorative coin issue marking the Centenary of the end of World War One.
Two Troy Ounces of Fine Silver
The coin is minted in 2 Troy Ounces of pure 999 silver – purer than sterling silver which is the traditional British silver standard and heavier than the standard two-ounce coin.
Large 50mm Diameter
The coin has been issued in a much larger than usual 50mm diameter rather than the more traditional 38.6mm Crown Size. The larger diameter was chosen especially given the significance of the great war centenary. The complete poem by McCrae (In Flanders Fields) is engraved on the coin. This most famous of all war poems is the source of our national symbol of remembrance – the red poppy.
Each of the two smaller poppies is set with red crystal jewels set within the bas-relief. The larger poppy also struck in bas-relief has been hand enamelled in red and black by skilled craftsmen.
