Prince Philip The Nation Salutes You — Commemorating The Life And Legacy Of The Duke of Edinburgh
His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was only months away from his 100th birthday when he passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle on April 9, 2021. The next day, from 12 pm, across the country and the world, saluting batteries fired gun salutes at the start of each minute, for 40 minutes to mark his passing. The nation came together the following week to witness the final chapter in Prince Philip’s life, as he was laid to rest in what was an intensely personal funeral service, choreographed by the Prince himself.
The Prince Philip Memorial Salute £5 Coin is the Royal Navy's final salute to their Lord High Admiral
In recognition of Prince Philip's service to our nation, his distinguished career in the Royal Navy and his role as Captain-General of the Royal Marines, a £5 coin has been officially issued under license with the Royal Navy.
In his seven decades as the Queen’s ‘strength and stay’ Prince Philip supported over 780 organisations and charities, founded The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, was an advocate for the advancement of science and technology, and even served as president of the committee to advise on the design of new coins and medals at The Royal Mint. Following a period of active Naval service from 1939 to 1952, Prince Philip remained closely connected with the Armed Forces throughout his life and was Captain-General of the Royal Marines from 1952 to 2017. In 2011, on the occasion of his 90th Birthday, the title and office of Lord High Admiral was bestowed upon Prince Philip. The Prince Philip Memorial Salute £5 Coin is a respectful tribute to a genuinely exceptional life and a distinguished Naval career. This is the only memorial coin officially licensed with the Royal Navy.
