The date was May 16, 1943. At precisely 2128 hours, Bomber Command’s 617 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton, Lincolnshire in nineteen specially adapted Lancaster bombers and flew into history. Their mission, codenamed Operation Chastise, would become the most famous of all World War II bombing raids. It was so ambitious and so risky that even to this day it is hard to believe it is not a work of fiction. Their target was to destroy three dams deep within the German heartland - the men and their mission became known as the Dambusters. The Dambusters Raid was a major morale booster for Britain and her allies, proving they were more than capable of taking the battle to Germany.

Honour the heroes of Britain’s famed fighting force with the Dambusters 75th Anniversary Silver Coin Set

Capturing the drama of this daring feat of ingenuity, bravery and skill the Dambusters 75th Anniversary Silver Coin Set pays tribute to Barnes Wallis, Guy Gibson and the brave men of 617 Squadron.

The first coin “Bombs Gone” depicts the moment when at 28 minutes past midnight descending to within a few feet of the water Wing Commander Gibson’s aircraft – the first to attack the Möhne Dam – released its huge 9,000lb cylindrical rotating bomb. A flight lieutenant who watched what happened at the Möhne Dam described the scene: “The wing commander’s load was placed just right and a spout of water went up 300 feet (91.44m) into the air,” he said. Gibson’s bomb did not, however, breach the dam.

The next coin titled “Dam Breached” shows the dramatic scene of the next attack by Melvin Young, his bomb struck its target “A huge column of water rose and a shock could be seen rippling through the lake. The dam was beginning to break.”

The commitment, perseverance and sheer dogged determination in the face of dangerous and improbable odds have meant that operation “Chastise” and Wallis’ bouncing bomb have become the stuff of legend — a lasting symbol of Britain’s gallant fight against tyranny.

A masterpiece of minting each coin is crafted in solid Sterling Silver and to a Proof finish

Struck in the highest quality PROOF condition, not once,  but twice onto a special mirrored surface, every detail of the coins' design stands out with remarkable clarity due to the care and attention of craftsmen in producing the master tools. The 24-carat gold inlaid privy mark is ingeniously shaped to represent Barnes Wallis’ revolutionary bouncing bomb.

Layered with precious Black-Ruthenium ‒ rarer than platinum!

To create the sense of night-time drama each of these coins has been selectively layered with Black Ruthenium. Known as ‘black gold’ Black Ruthenium is actually a type of platinum metal that looks like dark platinum, but is 100 times rarer! The highly polished proof black ruthenium background of the night’s sky contrasts with the black ruthenium etched relief of the water; in the foreground the details of the dam, exploding bomb and searchlights are struck in a highly polished bas relief.

The coins’ striking designs perfectly recollect the dark and moody night time setting in which the daring raids took place!
